Trouble89I hear what ya are saying but you’re throwing stones in the wrong direction. Sure good make up, lighting, camera angles and airbrushing, that’s just a magazine doing its job. But the whole starving thing, that ain’t got nothing to do with urban or men’s magazines. If you look at urban mags, the def of beauty has been expanding in the last three years to cover a wide range of body types. Hell on my site I got from thick dimes like Temeca to waifs like Suzy Perez. Men’s magazines have curvier honeys than the mainstream media. What men think is beautiful hasn’t change much since caveman times. Look at porn, what we like is not what is the mainstreem media image.
The real issue is movies, TV and the fashion industry. A def mainly created by gay men and women, ironically. It got nothing to do with what men like. It’s like when you watch America’s Top Model. The bangest chick always gets told to lose weight when she don’t need too. They tell them they look too “commercial” which is a code word for men’s magazines, etc. So you want to point fingers put them at New York, Paris and Hollywood. Point it Paris Hilton and the runway. But don’t point them at men, we didn’t create it and we don’t dig it.
Just to piggyback on BlackJack, the actual models have nothing to do with the images and therefore cannot be held accountable for their portrayal. Everyone is under the influence of the main client. For example the photographs above are from Show Magazine, The models, photographers and graphic designers all cater to the desires of Show Magazine if they want to be paid and have their work displayed in the magazine.
Show wants ultra-smooth – hyper color images, so that is what appears in the magazine – no blemishes, stretch marks etc. the skin of every model in every picture appears to be almost glossy – always even. And then there is the thing they do with the eye colors at times. This is exactly the product that Show feels the public wants and given the amount of praise their magazine receives I guess they are correct in their assessment of want the magazine purchasing public desires. Hopefully the trend will swing the other way and more natural images will become the norm.

First, great work as always BlackJack. You’re starting to make this look too easy, lol.
Second, Show’s strengths are in choosing the best girls–they’re just whipping Smooth, BlackMen and even King in this regard–and in at least having a definable style. Currency magazine, which never made it out the gate, was going to ape Show’s style heavily in their Honeyz section. I saw some of the preliminary layouts and they were identical to Show.
Third, the urban mags will eventually come around to natural because people are getting tired of all the airbrushing and hyper glossiness. Allure, Vogue, Sport’s Illustrated (swimsuit edition) all keep it natural with the retouching. I don’t know why the black mags are lagging in that respect, but they’ll come around eventually.

I am a good friend of kalias, her bday is coming up next month for the guy that asked. And for the record yes all mags retouch photo’s but they hire these models because they are beautiful. Why shoot an ugly chic and waste a bunch of time tyrying to make her look good when you have a hottie like kalia who does the job??? And for you haters who think girls starve themselves to look like this, you are pointing your finger at the wrong girl! Kalia eats what she wants (her fave is sushi and pizza) but she also works her ass off in the gym! As you can see she is no stick figure, my girl has BODY!!!
