As a man, I find pillow talk in magazine interviews just silly. I don’t buy a word of it. It’s cool to see a fresh faces like Carmen Diaz keep it classy and sexy in her first magazine feature in Smooth Girl 19. Carmen comes across as a real person and not just as hype.

You’re just starting out, do you have any fears about the business and the industry?
I know this industry is tough and everyone has an opinion, but I have thick skin. Hopefully, that will help me, so I’m more curious.
Who would you like to work with next?
I would like to be featured in Show Magazine. I would like to work with Hype Williams and Erik White, or just work with anyone that would take me outside the box.
What’s your personal style?
I like to be sexy, classy and a little spicy. I want to stand out, so I like bright colors.
What three character traits would your friends use to describe you?
I think my friends would say I’m caring, goofy and outspoken. I would have to agree.
Aside from JLo, who inspires you?
Personally, my son is my biggest inspiration, he gives me so much. I just want to make him proud. My family and friends inspire so much too. In the industry there are so many people like Thalia, Vida Guerra, Alicia Keys, Halle Berry, and the list goes on and on; I’m inspired by strong independent women.
What are your lifelong dreams?
I would love to act. I want to star in movies. Acting has always been something I wanted to do. More than anything, I want to be someone people can look up to as a positive role model.
Do think that where you grew up made you a stronger person?
I think it most certainly has. I didn’t have all the material things I wanted growing up, but it made me value what I had. I think I’m a stronger person, because I can appreciate the little things but respect the hard work. When I meet a person, I can see the person for who they are, and not who they wear. I also think it helps me with my thick skin, because I feel like I come from the “bottom”, so I can’t lose.
In your interview with Smooth you said you wished people could see the softer side of South Philly, got any memories or stories you can share that captures it?
I actually grew up on North Philly and spent my summers in South Philly, until high school, when I moved permanently to South Philly. I want people to understand that what they see on the news is not what defines us. We are like everyone else. We work, come home, and take care of our families. I’m so tired of people thinking that once they cross “the line” that they will get jacked or shot or something. Where I came from people care about one another. We look after one another. I’m not saying that it’s not rough because it is, but we are not animals.

Agreed. If she was artificial or heavily photoshopped I bet the comments would be different. The fact that she is personable and real in her interviews is making people say “average”. They lie, you don’t see beauty like this daily.

I concur. She looks great, but not that next level. Granted, no one here would say no to her, but that’s not what we are generally critiquing with these models. However, I am curious about her chess game… she gets bonus points for that!!

I’ve often thought the same thing. I mean, it must be hard to hear the negative things that people say or write, but at the same time you can’t expect everyone to like you. If you put yourself out there, you’re out there for good and bad.
What I think is really sad are the girls that pay more attention to the negative instead of the positive. All the girls here have fans! I just hope they remember that.
